History

A sign on the current Flume Bridge indicates 1886 as the year of construction. However, no records exist to support this date. Some publications state that the existing bridge was constructed elsewhere and moved to this location. That claim is not substantiated either. The Flume Bridge is one of twenty-two Paddleford truss covered bridges remaining in New England. The builder’s name and the cost of construction have yet to be determined. Between 1971 and 1983, steel girders were added under the wooden truss for support. There is no record of who did the work and how much it cost. In 2009, the stone retaining wall adjacent to the bridge, and one of the abutments was repaired by Northern New England Field Services, LLC of Stewartstown, at the cost of $23,325.[1]
