Covered bridge truss types
A truss is the framework of timbers that carries a bridge's load. This page counts the truss types recorded for bridges in our list. Only 70 of 197 bridges have a sourced truss type, mostly from New Hampshire's state inventory and MaineDOT.
| Truss type (as recorded) | Bridges | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Town lattice | 21 | Cilleyville-Bog Bridge, Keniston Bridge, Squam River Bridge, Haverill-Bath Bridge |
| Paddleford | 19 | Albany Bridge, Bartlett Bridge, Swiftwater Bridge, Pittsburg-Clarksville Bridge |
| Queenpost | 7 | Bump Bridge, Turkey Jim's Bridge, River Road Bridge, Carlton Bridge |
| Howe | 6 | Columbia Bridge, Mount Orne Bridge, Packard Hill Bridge, Clark's Bridge |
| Kingpost | 5 | Blacksmith Shop Bridge, Blow-Me-Down Bridge, Dingleton Hill Bridge, Sentinel Pine Bridge |
| Long | 4 | Blair Bridge, Smith Millennium Bridge, Robyville Bridge, Lowes Bridge |
| Pratt | 2 | Sulphite Bridge, Hancock/Greenfield Bridge |
MaineDOT notes that the truss designs used in Maine were those of professional bridge builders, including Palmer, Burr, Town, Long and Howe, and that five of Maine's remaining bridges use Paddleford construction, a modified Long truss (MaineDOT, checked 2026-11-01).
Counts reflect only bridges whose truss type a source records; Vermont's state layer does not include truss type.
