History
The current Smith Millennium Bridge is at least the third bridge at this location. The second bridge was built in 1850 by Harmon Marcy. The bridge was long maintained by the Town of Plymouth, receiving repairs in 1940, 1949, 1958, and 1971. In the midst of a large fundraising campaign, the Smith Bridge was destroyed by arson on April 16, 1993. A new covered bridge, known as the Smith Millennium Bridge, was constructed in 2001 by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, E.D. Swett, Inc., Stanley E. Graton of 3G Construction, Inc. of Holderness, and Hiltz Construction, Inc., Heflin & Montgomery Associates, Construx, Inc., BAC Killam, Hayden Hillsgrove Masonry, CWS Fence & Guardrail, Inc., A.J. Cameron, Inc., Pike Industries, East Coast Signal, Capitol Alarm, Inc., R&D Paving, Inc., and Tri-State Curb, Inc. The project cost $3.9 million.[1]
